Figure de la Terre opera is based on the story of french expedition team measuring the world in the 18th century around Northern Finland.
The main function of the real-time visualization of “La Figure de la Terre” –opera is to offer supporting structure for the narration of the storyline. The story is divided between Lapland and Paris, which will be also reflected in the aesthetic textures, atmospheres and subtle evocative qualities and metaphors in the visuals.
Lapland is aesthetically primitive and mystical; the textures resemble woodcarving and etching. There are also less colors and details in the Lapland visuals than in the Paris part. Another theme between these two locations is artificial / man-made versus natural, which will be reflected in the visual score. One example is the northern lights of Lapland, which will metamorphose into light shining through the stained colourful glass windows of a monastery in Paris. This external change also signifies a transformation of the “wild nordic” Christine into a nun.
The music and visuals are also connected in a more direct way. The northern lights element functions as Christine?s song and her singing is directly triggering and generating the visuals. The music and the visuals are interacting with each other thru real-time software.
The visual set-up aims to create a visual space, rather than a cinematic space, by four different projection surfaces:
1. The main retro-screen
2. Silhouttes behind the retro-screen
3. Projection on the stage
These different visual spaces are shown simultaneously and can be used to signify locations “here” and “there”. The “shadow” space behind the retro screen allows the instrumentalists to appear inside the visuals, and thus create immersive live effect.
